A Canadian Armed Forces plane left the Trenton, Ontario military base on Sunday to travel to Houston, Texas, carrying Hurricane Harvey cargo.
The provinces of Quebec and Ontario were involved in this operation of the Royal Canadian Air Force. In fact, Quebec will provide cots and blankets. Ontario, for its part, will provide nearly 14,000 infant formulas and more than 200 baby mattresses and bed blankets.
The Canadian government is helping the United States through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“Like all good neighbors, Canada and the United States are there for each other in times of crisis. Canadians are proud that the Royal Canadian Air Force, through its agility, flexibility and professionalism, is so well adapted to such humanitarian missions here and elsewhere in the world, “said Canadian Defense Minister Harjit S. Sajjan by way of communiqué.
“The Canadian Armed Forces will continue to work with other Canadian government departments and their FEMA partners to respond to requests for assistance as our American friends and neighbors recover from the disasters caused by Hurricane Harvey.”
Hurricane Harvey caused the evacuation of nearly 750,000 people. Approximately 1.1 million residents are currently covered by a voluntary evacuation order along the Gulf Coast.
In the City of Houston, more than 100,000 houses have been damaged, more than 40,000 people are in shelters and 436,000 households have applied for assistance.
