High blood pressure and heart failure can be treated with several drugs. However, many of them are on the list of those which represent a risk of cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has made the decision that’d be better to issue a recall for these drugs.
These drugs supposedly contain the active ingredient called valsartan. FDA stated that the recall happened because of a contamination, called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA for short), which can be found in these products. This is cataloged as being a possible human carcinogen.
This investigation is on-going and it specifically targets the levels of NDMA in those specific products. They’re looking for the possible effect they could have on a patient and what’s there to do to eliminate the impurity from the future products.
FDA said that it’s their duty to make sure the products are safe for the patients from the moment they’re produced. When problems are discovered with the products, the public must know and they should start the procedures to get the product off the market.
We’ve gathered a list of the products that are in the recall
Valsartan – from Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd, Major Pharmaceuticals and Solco Healthcare
Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ for short) – from Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd and Solco Healthcare
It’s good to remember that FDA said that not all the products that include valsartan are recalled. Also, patients who treat very serious illnesses, medical conditions, should keep on taking the recalled product until a replacement is found.
How to see if your medication is on that list
To see if your medication was recalled, read the name of the drug and the name of the company from the label that’s placed on the bottle If you cannot find this pieces of information, you should ask the pharmacy.
